Night Views! Robotaxi Wars,& Switchyard Vault Takes Shape. 18 July 2025 Giga Texas Update (05:35AM)

From Joe Tegtmeyer.

Gigafactory Texas! This is where Model Y’s, and Cyber Truck production happens and in 2025, the Next Generation Car(s), Cybercab & the Optimus Robot!

Night flight today, concentrating on close in shots of the south end of the main factory and medium distance views of the full length of the west side of the factory. I don’t often get up to the factory this early in the morning, so I hope you enjoy the views I was able to get of the inside and the clues we can see about the activities going on inside.

In the video introduction, I talk about some recent activity on the part of both Waymo and Uber to try and counter the Tesla Robotaxi service that is almost 1 month old! Of course, to big fanfare, Tesla expanded its operations area, and this did not go unnoticed by Waymo.

Yesterday, Waymo announced more than a doubling in service area for their autonomous ride hailing vehicles all around Austin, and in particular, to the north and the south of the original area. This indicates they. had been planning this for quite some time to ensure they were able to get HD mapping and testing completed and were likely waiting to do this once they say what Tesla would do. Competition is good, and may the better solution, service and scalability processes win out in the marketplace!

Also taking note was Uber that announced a $300 million investment into Lucid vehicles that will user Nuro’s autonomous software.

Nuro is an American robotics company headquartered in Mountain View, California, founded in 2016 by Jiajun Zhu and Dave Ferguson, both former Google engineers. It develops autonomous delivery vehicles and self-driving technology, with its flagship Nuro Driver being an AI-first, vehicle-agnostic system designed for applications like robotaxis, commercial fleets, and personal vehicles. Nuro has logged over 1.4 million autonomous miles with zero at-fault reported incidents.

This investment is expected to include the purchase of about 20,000 Lucid vehicles over a 6-year period, starting in 2026. How this three-way agreement between these companies will work out, including details about how the service, software, integration and more will work was not provided in the announcement.

I also discuss next week’s 2nd Quarter Financial Results meeting to be held on Wednesday, 23 July here at Giga Texas. This meeting is one many people have been looking for not only for results of the past quarter, but hopefully more and better guidance on what the 2nd half of the year will be like for Tesla, it’s product line, regulatory changes that affect batteries and FSD, the Robotaxi service and more!
