From Bearded Tesla Guy.
Tesla Model Y Standard is just now starting to ship to customer orders. We had our first look at the new, cheaper Model Y last month, and finally there are available demo models for drive. I took a new Juniper Model Y Standard on Demo to get a good feel for the “on-road” experience, focused on road noise, comfort, ride quality and overall experience in comparison to the Premium Model Y and the previous generation Model Y.
The Model Y Standard that we took the key card for was a black Model Y with the new standard 18” Wheels. There’s not much configuring you can do with the standard, so the experience is generally the same across the options, with the exception of changing the wheels to the 19” wheels that are found standard on the Long Range rear wheel drive premium Model Y. I was able to get the car on city streets, highway and parking lots to get the full experience across different speeds and traffic conditions.
The first thing you will notice in the standard Model Y is just how dark it is on the inside. Admittedly it was dark outside, but the lack of open glass roof, ambient lights, there is a lack of sufficient glow illuminating the cabin. If you haven’t been in other Tesla’s, this may not seem off to you as it’s closer to what other standard cars on the road are.
On the road, the noise from wind and tires/road are noticeable, but not terrible. The refresh Juniper Model Y launched with some fantastic updates to the materials on the inside that led to a truly quiet experience in the cabin of the car on the road across all speeds. This standard model has removed carpet, padded plastics, and other materials from the Premium, which lead to a noisier cabin. That said, I would say the road noise and wind noise is louder than the refresh Premium Model Y, but marginally quieter than the previous generation Model Y.
Next up is suspension, which is one of the surprising areas i was pleased with. The suspension is not quite as refined, or soft as the Premium Model Y, but it is noticeably smoother than the previous generation Model Y. The car soaks up bumps in the road much smoother and quieter.
The other things of note are that the sound system was surprisingly good (roughly half the stereo as the Premium Model Y), headlights are ok, but nowhere close to the illumination capability on the Premium, Frunk tray seems fragile for heavier cargo, and lacks any light under the hood. The 18” wheels provide a nice comfortable ride, but they are truly ugly. Even with the wheel covers on, the wheels leave a lot to be desired.
All that said, this Standard Model Y is a fantastic option, and offers a great compromise of features for price. The price is still too high in my opinion, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see incentives on this model as we get closer to the end of the year. $35k seems like the right price, but with the battery being close to what’s in the premium option, I’m not sure what other items would bring enough cost out to get to that price point.
Price aside, this car has some quirks and features lacking that I don’t like, but nothing on that list would be a deal breaker. When it comes to strictly the car as a stripped down option, Tesla executed well. This is every bit the same experience of every other Tesla, with AI4 on board, FSD capable of way more autonomy than any other car in this class, and even though its the “slowest” model, it certainly accelerates much faster than any other car in this price point.
