Electric Cars Don’t Need Gear Shifts – So WHY Is Toyota Working On One?

A few weeks ago, we heard the news that Toyota had patented a new type of pseudo clutch and pseudo gearshift for an electric car.

The idea behind it seemed to be to get an electric vehicle to behave like an internal combustion engine one – but with EVs offering superior torque and no need for gears, we were a little perplexed – as some of you were, too.

But after some noodling on the subject, we’ve got some ideas as to why it might not be as bonkers an idea as it first seems.
