EV RED-E? Bolting Across Michigan in a 2020 Chevy Bolt (pre-recall!)

From Plug and Play EV.

The last significant part of our summer all-electric road trip (before hanging out in Ohio for a couple of weeks) covers most of Michigan, from the sparsely populated Upper Peninsula (UP) to the northwest coast of the Mitten and the high-speed interstates back to the south of the Great Lakes state.

It’s a good 600+ miles of driving that takes us past 2k for the trip as a whole and runs the gamut of how to charge an EV on the road.

(As a reminder, this was filmed in our 2020 Chevy Bolt EV and before the recall was expanded by GM to include all model years. That’s why we’re charging high up into the pack, as the current limitations didn’t apply to this car at that point.)

From destination charging at our hotel in Escanaba, MI, doing the tourist thing on the south shore of Lake Superior, crossing the UP along Lake Michigan’s north shore, and zig-zagging back down the Mitten after a stop in Mackinaw City, we cover how much Michigan’s DC fast charging situation has changed in the past 12 months and where some gaps still need to be filled.

We also have a less-than-encouraging intro to one of the entities hoping to take on the job, RED-E Charge – https://www.redecharge.com – but have no problems finding an established network to keep us moving.

0:00 – Intro
0:30 – Starting in Escanaba, MI with a full destination charge
2:41 – Arriving in Marquette, MI (Lake Superior) + L2 top up
5:33 – Trip stats (halfway point): distance, costs, and charging details
6:55 – Leaving Escanaba, MI to travel across Upper Peninsula (Lake Michigan shoreline)
10:00 – Crossing the Mackinaw Bridge
11:00 – Destination charging in Mackinaw City, MI
13:51 – Elk Rapids, MI – Testing RED-E Charge network
17:30 – Kalkaska, MI – ChargePoint DCFC (Michigan Dieselgate funds)
23:10 – Trips stats at 2,000 miles
23:38 – Kawkawlin, MI – ChargePoint DCFC #2 (also state Dieselgate funds)

For anyone who doesn’t care to wait for our final trip summary video, totting up costs, highlighting trends and assessing the reliability across several EV charging networks, you can take a sneak peak at the results in our trip log here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1QHAbyMvQXPrkwhuNshfhh3l2RW1wKVRKDkGWMeG3H8U/edit?usp=sharing
