In this episode Imogen Bhogal and Robert Llewellyn delve into one of the most extreme electric vehicles ever built — the McMurtry Spéirling. This tiny, single-seater fan car smashed the Goodwood Hill Climb record with a mind-blowing 39.08-second run, leaving supercars and F1 legends behind.
Imogen and Robert visit McMurtry HQ to uncover how this groundbreaking EV achieves 0–60 mph in under 1.4 seconds, generates 2,000 kg of downforce from twin fans (even from a standstill), and fits a 100 kWh battery into a car weighing just over a tonne. Beyond its twin-fan vacuum system — which literally sucks the car to the ground for immense grip without the drag of wings — McMurtry, in collaboration with technology partner About:Energy, has developed sophisticated battery modelling that enables them to squeeze 100 kWh of energy into a Dacia-sized chassis using custom-built, high-performance Moli Cell P50B 21700 cells.
Whilst this might all seem a bit silly – this extreme performance has unlocked some equally extreme efficiency that could make it’s way into normal passenger cars. This is a delightful glimpse into what happens when you give engineers a ludicrous moonshot and a modest budget…!
