From Wheelsboy.
Volkswagen has had a rough few years in China. Local brands like BYD, Li Auto, XPeng, and a dozen others have been eating their lunch in nearly every segment, and VW knows it. The ID.ERA 9X is part of their response: a 5.2-meter giant built on a platform co-developed with SAIC, loaded with Chinese-market features, and priced to compete.
On paper, the 9X delivers. Dual 15.6-inch 2.5K screens, heated, cooled, and massaging leather seats on every trim level, a hidden instrument cluster, and a UI that is a genuine step up from anything VW has shipped before. The exterior styling is genuinely striking: think what would happen if you asked VW to produce a Range Rover.
In this video, we break down the ID.ERA 9X from the outside in, and ask whether VW has finally cracked the code on competing in China, or whether trying to beat the Chinese at their own game means giving up what makes VW so special.
