It this episode, you’ll hear about how and why service lifetimes of EV batteries have improved to the point where battery packs outlast the vehicles they power. New cells made with single-crystal electrodes show even more incredible durability, retaining nearly 80% of their original capacity after 20,000 charge/discharge cycles (equivalent to driving approximately 8 million km).
Dr. Toby Bond is a Senior Scientist at the Canadian Light Source, Canada’s national synchrotron facility. Toby completed his MSc and PhD in Dr. Jeff Dahn’s lab at Dalhousie University, where he developed new tools to characterize and predict battery degradation. In his current role, he works with battery manufacturers and automotive companies, using advanced x-ray-based tools to better understand their batteries from the atomic level to the cell level.
