The Triumph Dolomite Sprint, built from 1973 to 1980, was the first mass produced 16-valve car and the first British car to come with alloy wheels as standard. It was the fastest, most expensive and most desirable of the Triumph range. Engineers managed to get 150bhp out of the twin carb 1998cc engine (a version of the engine was already being made for Saab by Triumph) in testing, but the finished product had a safer 127bhp, giving it a 115mph top speed and 0-60 score of 8.5 seconds. This was a quick car for its class, all thanks to that trick 4-valve alloy cylinder head design. The Triumph was not a double overhead cam (DOHC) though. It used a simpler single cam set up.
Using that power, rwd, a limited slip diff and weight of only 1041kg (thanks in part to those GKN alloys) The Dolly Sprint did well in the British Touring Car Championship. The cars of Andy Rouse (later synonymous with Sierra Cosworths) and Tony Dron winning the manufacturers’ title in 1974 and Rouse the driver’s title in 1975.
