The Tesla Model Y is the best selling car in the world, regardless of type (ev, hybrid, gas). Its popularity is no surprise given its size, and more recently, its more affordable price. But the Model Y was released in 2020, and since then has had some modest updates to some of the hardware, but nothing on the outside, or major feature upgrades.
The refresh Model 3 released just last year and was widely accepted as a smash hit retake on the original EV that truly made EV’s viable. That refresh came with a number of new features that many Model Y owners have been asking for the last year, when will these be coming to the Model Y?
Recently we have seen some covered up Model Y’s in the public doing testing. Nothing obvious has really been seen until just now. Out of China we are getting a look at both the exterior and a slight glimpse at the front of the cabin. Some of the rumored changes seem to have made their way into this new refresh Model Y!
First up is the front end where we see a refresh front bumper that features a new Cybertruck/Cybercab style light bar. The headlights appear to now be under the hood area and the fog lights deleted. On the rear, we can see a slight update to the fascia for a more aggressive look, but most prominently, a new red light bar that connects the tail lights on the rear of the vehicle. This confirms previous shots we have seen of the supposed light bar that is slightly suspended, leaving a red glow on the rear of the car.
The biggest surprise was the square steering wheel seen in this car. Like the Cybertruck, the new Model Y appears to feature this squarcle look bringing all of the functions found on the stalks right here on the steering wheel. Although the pictures are not perfectly in focus, it appears the functions around the wheel are the same as seen on the Model 3.
The Dash and ambient lighting also matches the refresh Model 3, and the features are likely to be the same. This refresh Model Y should have a new screen for the rear passengers, cooled seats up front, upgraded sound deadening, aero improvements, new lower rolling resistance tires and wheels. All of this should bring the Model Y in at roughly the same price as today, and with an EPA number likely slightly exceeding the current version.
