Vehicle power cycle was necessary in my case when switching from BluePilot to Ford system (BlueCruise) due to using OpenPilot longitudinal control – if Ford ACC is used, can be swapped without vehicle power cycle.
Full explanation of how the coupler works / why the problem exists:
The Ford F-150 Lightning has a unique wiring layout that causes issues when you install your comma 3x device.
It exposes a stub that causes reflections—signal echoes—that interfere with communication between modules. This becomes a real problem during startup, when all the vehicle’s modules boot and start broadcasting. Those reflections can corrupt data or cause modules to drop off the network entirely.
That’s why people see errors like:
Power steering faults
One-pedal faults
“Service Vehicle Soon” messages
Sometimes even AC or accessory weirdness
Now here’s the key point: once the Comma device is fully booted, it starts actively transmitting on the CAN bus. That can overpower the reflection problem, making things seem fine. But the stub is still physically there, and you’re relying on Comma to mask a wiring issue, which isn’t reliable.
This adapter fixes the root cause:
It removes the stub effect so it doesn’t reflect signals
It restores proper CAN termination.
And it makes the bus stable even before Comma boots
So instead of masking the problem, it prevents it from happening—no more startup errors, no flakey behavior, and a fully stable CAN connection from the moment the truck powers up.
