Honda and Sony have partnered up to bring the Sony prototype we first saw several years ago at CES to reality. Although the vehicle does feature some really cool tech, some in which surpasses what the Tesla Model 3 offers, it falls far short in other areas.

In a world dominated by Tesla, it is important to look at the big picture if you want to compete in this new automotive landscape. The Afeela just doesn’t cut the mustard.

With a starting price over $80k, over $90k for the signature series, you expect a lot. This car unfortunately does not offer similar features you will find in comparably priced cars, let alone the highly popular Tesla Model 3.

The Afeela is priced like a Lucid Air, and does bring some really cool tech, including a screen that pans across the entire dash board in the front. That comes with the ability to stream movies, interact with the on board apps, and even play playstation! When specing out the Signature series, you also have 2 screens in the rear that offer a whole host of apps to interact with while driving.

Packed to the gill with cameras and sensors, the Afeela has all the hardware you could want to support a highly advanced driver assistance system. Unfortunately it is limited to Level 2 Plus as they say. That means you will always have to pay attention, and have you hand on the wheel when driving this vehicle, which is far less capability than you’d expect with the hardware on board.

The next issue comes when looking at charging. 3 years ago 150 kW would be minimally acceptable charging speed for a new EV. Here in 2025? That is unacceptable, especially at this price point. We do not have any details on the actual charging curve but the rep did say we should expect 10-80% in about 30 minutes, which again, is sub-par.

Once charging is complete, you will be looking at an estimated 300 miles of range. 3 years ago this would have been minimally acceptable, but again, in 2025, this is not great, especially at this price point.

But it doesn’t end here, even the power is lacking, at 240 hp, this is hundreds less than the completion. Sub par acceleration, charging, range, and price will be a big challenge for this vehicles future.

This vehicle is the first offering from the Honda/Sony partnership, and is expected to be assembled in Ohio. That being the first offering of a fully electric vehicle in this partnership, perhaps we will see more progress in future models. Whatever happens, this particular vehicle is dead on arrival.
