Toyota’s Big Pivot: Chinese Partners Build the Next RAV4, Highlander & Sienna
Toyota is executing a major strategic pivot in China by deepening collaboration with its two joint ventures—GAC Toyota and FAW Toyota—to locally build key models like the next-generation RAV4 (Wildlander in China), Highlander, and Sienna. Production of the updated Wildlander is set to debut at the Shanghai Auto Show in April 2025, closely mirroring the global RAV4 changes. Meanwhile, GAC Toyota already manufactures the Highlander and Sienna locally, with intelligent hybrids now making up nearly half of its 2024sales. Toyota’s strategy also involves increasing autonomy for local staff in product development and ramping up production, targeting 2.5–3 million units annually in China by 2030.
