In this installment of Electric Conversations, Miss GoElectric visits a NASCAR event to speak with race fans as they check out the #35 ABB NASCAR EV Prototype.
She asked fans if they think the power grid is ready for electric vehicles. Their perspectives might surprise you!
Companies like ABB are providing the hardware to improve the grid in order to accommodate new energy consumption from electric vehicles, artificial intelligence, and new industry. There is certainly a lot of work to do in preparation for an all electric future.
Most of us think of additional power generation and a strengthening of the distribution systems first. Making the grid smarter by managing the timing of electricity usage is another way the grid is changing to accommodate a bright future.. Connected devices like electric vehicles, charging hardware, and even appliances can respond to demand on the grid by reducing consumption when energy demand is high.
Several new EVs on the market today are capable of powering homes during outages or shortages. In a few parts of the country, certain EVs act as a virtual power plant, providing some of the energy in their batteries back to the grid as needed. When a large number of EVs works together in that way, they can actually *strengthen* the grid.
