Tesla Model Y: Honest Review After 15k Miles – The Good AND The Bad

From Bearded Tesla Guy.

The Refresh Juniper Model Y has been delivering to customers now for about 10 months and we were able to get our Launch Series LR AWD Model Y in the first month or two of deliveries. Since then, we have put on over 15k miles over about 9 months and have truly had a chance to give the car a full shakedown.

There is a lot to like about the new Tesla Model Y, and that really shouldn’t be a surprise given the success of the previous generation. This new refreshed Model Y takes the previous gen car and steps up the comfort in a big way. Between the sound proofing and the ride comfort, the New Model Y feels like a completely different car on the road with a much more comfortable and refined ride.

That isn’t to say there aren’t some drawbacks to this updated version of the Tesla Model Y. First thing that comes to mind is the fact that there is no longer a traditional gear shift knob, like we saw in the refresh Model 3, Model S, Model X and Cybertruck. Unlike those other variants though, the Model Y did keep the turn signal stalk, which was a smart move when trying to attract the average consumer.

The updated features on this car include some heavy hitters like cooled front seats, a rear screen, updated front and rear ends. The lighting as a whole, inside and out, improve the overall experience in the car for both drivers and passengers.

Of course Hardware 4 has been out for some time in the Model Y now, and that is still the case for now. HW5 is rumored to be around the corner and will likely be fitted to the upcoming models shortly after launch. This doesn’t guarantee that the HW4 vehicles wont be as capable, but the new HW5 specs seem to be rather impressive, which would likely lead to a much more capable system for autonomous driving.

Speaking of FSD, the experience has been relatively great in our Model Y, although it would be impossible to forget our unfortunate mishap during a coast to coast attempt on V13 FSD. After colliding with an object in the road, the vehicle started to slowly lose its ability to charge. Fortunately we were able to make it to a Service Center before it completely stopped working.

It turned out the HV battery pack was already on its way to an irreversible cell imbalance. The HV battery pack failed at about 15k miles, which is very uncommon for Tesla, and certainly the first time I have experienced a pack failure.

Other than these things, the refresh Model Y is such a great car. It’s a value unmatched by other options on the market. It comes with price, comfort, space, and tech. It truly is the full package and will continue to outsell most other cars on the market for the foreseeable future.
