From Bearded Tesla Guy.
Tesla just released the all new cheaper Tesla Model Y Standard. This new trim Model Y comes stripped down with less features, respectable range, and enhanced look. Does this all equate to a smashing success or a total failure?
Tesla has been teasing "more affordable models" for some time. Elon Musk himself said in the previous earnings call that the cheaper model was a Model Y. With this, we waited to see what all would be changed in the refresh Model Y to make up this new cheaper option.
The Model Y Standard comes with a respectable 321 Miles of range, made possible by a slightly smaller version of the battery pack found in the premium models. That allows the cheaper Model Y to also charge at a peak rate of 225 kW, also respectable.
Rear wheel drive is the only option, and you can have any interior color so long as it is black. The exterior can be had in gray, white or black. The wheels come standard with a new smaller 18" variant, and can be upgraded to the 19" wheels found standard on the premium models for $1,500.
The outside is sporadically showcasing a new look differentiating it from the rest of the lineup, including a simplified front bumper, no light bar front or back, less advanced headlights, and some previous model touches like the rear glass.
On the inside, you will find fabric surrounded by a vegan leatherette material, simplified seat controls, more plastic, and overall a less premium feel. That said, the interior has a lot to like, including the best part of the Model Y, the overall interior space.
Even with the stripped down version of the Model Y, Tesla ships this car with all the equipment necessary to operate their Full Self Driving software. One change though does include the removal of Autosteer from the basic Autopilot setup that comes standard with the Model Y. That means without spending $8k for FSD, the advanced driver assist suite only includes traffic aware cruise control.
This new Standard Model Y starts at $39,990, a far cry from affordable. In fact, this car is just $5k less than the premium RWD version that comes with significantly more range, faster charging, premium interior, and a whole lot more. Add in these upgraded 19" wheels on the car in the video, and you are now just $3,500 difference.
What we were hoping for was something closer to $30k, meaning this car likely wont move the needle much, but it is nice to see Tesla challenging their own status quo.
