Can a 7-seater Chinese SUV really go toe-to-toe against one of the toughest off-roaders there is? Well, we’re about to find out as we take a Chery Tiggo 9 to an off-road course and run it in a series of challenges against a Land Rover Discovery!

On the face of it, you may think the Discovery would walk this, but is there more to the Chery than meets the eye? Let’s take a closer look at the stats…

Starting with the Land Rover, it’s powered by a 3-litre V6 diesel that can produce 306hp and 700Nm. This power is sent to all four wheels, and it weighs in at 2,230kg. It also comes with several features to help it tackle this off-road course, including a central locking diff, air suspension, and a terrain response system which uses electronics to maximise traction.

As for the Chery, it’s equipped with a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine as well as three electric motors, and these combine to produce 430hp and 580Nm – more than the Discovery! It also has All Wheel Drive, and the weight is almost similar, tipping the scales at 2,233kg. However, apart from off-road mode, it has no clever terrain driving features as found in the Disco.

It’s also worth noting that to keep things fair, we’ve fitted both cars with Devante Terratoura all-terrain tyres!

So surely it will be a walkover for the Land Rover, right? There’s only one way to find out for sure… It’s time to go OFF-ROADING!
