From Alex on Autos.
For those shoppers who can look past two little letters, EV, you’ll find the most practical pickup in America. OK, you also have to look past the price tag, but spending a week with the GMC Sierra EV made me wonder: is it time all pickups had a reinvention like this? What if… There was a full-sized gas-powered unibody truck that could do what the Sierra EV could do. How about a hybrid?
And what does it do that’s so great? Well, it’s roomier and better at hauling than a regular Sierra 1500. The midgate is what really makes the EV the way to go, but even if you never need to haul 4×10 sheetgoods, the back seat’s bigger, the screens are huge, the front trunk is super handy, you’ll never have to stop at a gas station again, and it should be cheaper to run for just about everyone in the country.

GMC calls this a pickup truck. But in practice it’s something else entirely — an 11-cubic-foot front trunk, a mid-gate that lets you carry 8-foot sheet goods completely inside with the tailgate closed, a 205 kWh battery that can power the average American home for over a week during a power outage, four-wheel steering that rivals the turning circle of a compact crossover, 725 horsepower from twin electric motors, and up to 478 miles of GM-rated range (around 390 miles real-world at 1.9 miles per kWh). That’s the 2026 GMC Sierra EV AT4 Max Pack — starting at $92,195 and climbing to roughly $95,000 as tested — and it genuinely does things no gasoline pickup truck can replicate. The base model starts at $64,995 for 280 miles of EPA range, with a mid-level 170 kWh pack at $73,195 for 406 miles, and the Denali topping out at $105,190 with 760 horsepower.
In this full review we walk through all three battery packs and how the Sierra EV’s price compares to a gas Sierra (it’s about $10K more than the 6.2L V8 equivalent, not the $20K gap you might expect), the charging reality at home, at 208V office power, and at DC fast chargers (0-100% in approximately 100 minutes), the dedicated unibody platform shared with the Silverado EV and Hummer EV, four-wheel steering and its towing advantages, the mid-gate deep dive with real lumber-hauling results, the MultiPro tailgate versus the F-150 Lightning’s origami fold, front seat criticism at $95K, the rear seat room and child seat fitment (it fits two extended rear-facing seats behind the driver), the infotainment system’s no-CarPlay problem, instrumented 0-60 (4.2 seconds) and braking (150 feet — because this weighs nearly 9,000 pounds), ride quality with and without adaptive air suspension (D vs A — a massive difference), cabin noise at 62 dB, vehicle-to-home capability and the $8,098 GM V2H kit versus Ford’s $5,200 and Tesla’s $2,000 alternatives, and a full comparison against the Ford F-150 Lightning, Silverado EV, Rivian R1T, and incoming Scout Truck.
