The Tesla Model Y Performance has been getting a lot of looks this last week as customer deliveries have finally begun. And although many of the people taking delivery right now were able to get a 3 hour window hack at order to secure the $7,500 tax credit, the value proposition of this car is actually quite surprising, even without the bonus.

With the release of the refresh Model Y Juniper, we saw some very important, and extremely desired updates to enhance the overall ownership experience. It was more than just a facelift, it was a truly structural update to the driving experience.

Quite possibly the biggest complaint of the original Model Y was how uncomfortable the ride was. With a stiff suspension, and even bumpier ride in the performance variant, many customers were turned off after a test ride. In 2023 Tesla did roll out an update to the suspension on the legacy car, but there was still room for improvement.

The refresh Model Y sports a brand new suspension that brings comfort to a much more appropriate level. What’s even more amazing about this is the suspension on the Performance Model Y, while still differing from the Premium version, has quite a sophisticated adaptive system that allows for performance when you want it, and comfort when you need it. This variable suspension takes the compromise of ride comfort when going to a Performance model and throws that right out the window.

What Tesla learned in selling more Tesla Model Y’s than any other car in the world for 2 years in a row, is that the Model Y owner does not track their car like a Model 3 Performance owner does. And this makes sense given its profile is perfect for families. When you are selling to families, one thing that isn’t as common, is having time for personal hobbies on the weekends like track day. More likely you will find these cars in the parking lots of baseball fields and soccer fields across the country on any given Saturday.

So if the general Model Y Performance owner doesn’t track their car, does that mean there’s room to soften up the ride a bit for comfort at the expense of the best possible track experience? Tesla has bet on that being a resounding yes, and I think they hit the mark on this one.

Unlike the legacy Model Y, the difference in ride comfort between the Premium version and the Performance version, you dont have to sacrifice a comfortable ride to make the jump, and that makes this Performance Model Y actually worth considering.

In fact, how this thing is priced right now, including all options included, when you stack up the line items, the difference between the Premium All Wheel Drive and the Performance, the difference is as little as $500. Literally $500 and you get nearly the same ride comfort, better seats, amazing wheels, more aggressive bumpers and visuals, slightly better screen, and loads of power. This is quite possibly the best deal on a Performance version of any Tesla today!

Now, when looking at the SUV market, even when narrowing down to small/compact SUV’s, you will not come close to this performance anywhere near this price, regardless of fuel type, and FSD capabilities on top! That makes the Performance Model Y the best Performance SUV on the market today.
