BREAKING: Tesla Introduces New Model – Shakes Up Model Y Lineup

Tesla just introduced a new model to their lineup. Just days after officially cancelling the Model S and Model X, Tesla seems to also be expanding on their current offering.

Tesla just recently launched a brand new Model Y called the Standard Model Y. This standard Model Y came stripped down and at a lower price while still offering well over 300 miles of range. Unfortunately that Standard Model Y has not sold particularly well given the price gap between the RWD Premium and this RWD Standard vs the equipment included.

Now Tesla has just released a new Standard Model Y and this time it’s AWD. Tesla has basically just created a clone of the RWD Standard Model Y and made it AWD. Just like for the Premium Model Y, the Standard Model Y now offers 2 drive unit options and the same equipment between the two.

With that change, Tesla Model Y lineup now stands at Model Y RWD, Model Y AWD, Premium Model Y RWD, Premium Model Y AWD and Performance Model Y. In essence, they have a performance, a premium and a standard trim option. Among the Standard and the Premium trim, you can have RWD with more range and less performance or you can have AWD with more performance and less range.

I think it’s an interesting option given the lackluster numbers that came from the launch of the Standard Model Y RWD. In the snow climates most people are conditioned to completely ignore options that are not AWD. This brings that more affordable Model Y option and presumably addresses that concern.

The other thing that this new variant Model Y has going for it is that the price gap between the Premium and this Standard is actually quite significant. Where the RWD is 5k less, but really more like 3,500 less after matching the wheels, the AWD is 7k less, or 5,500 less after matching the wheels.

The price difference in the Standard vs the Premium was always the issue, and assuming consumers compare price only against the Premium AWD, this may actually sell well. Only time will tell, and unless Tesla somehow comes up with a new price for the RWD, I wouldn’t be surprised if it ultimately finds its early demise.
