With a single planetary gear set, you can create infinite gear ratios. That is the genius of eCVT! It’s one of the most brilliant transmission designs ever developed, without the pulleys and belts of a traditional CVT (that a lot of people, especially enthusiasts, tend to hate).
The system is unbelievably simple. No belts, no pulleys. Just a single planetary gear set. And it is far less complicated than a traditional automatic transmission, DCT, or even a manual transmission. The catch, is that it must be paired with two electric motors. But it solves a very interesting problem.
Typical transmissions have set gear ratios. This forces your engine to operate across a wide RPM range. But engines tend to operate most efficiently at a single RPM, which tends to be a fairly low RPM, and they tend to create peak power at a single, much higher RPM. Whether you want efficiency or power, typical engines sweep over an RPM range, so they’re never sitting at peak efficiency for longer than a brief moment, and they’re never sitting at peak power for longer than a brief moment.
That’s where a CVT comes in. Because a CVT has in theory infinite gear ratios, you no longer have to link your wheel speed to your engine speed. You can set your engine speed to whatever RPM you want, whether for efficiency, or for power, and let it sit there, as the transmission adjusts the gear ratio behind the scenes, so you can have your engine literally just sit at its peak efficiency RPM for the given scenario, or its peak power RPM.
