While setting up my solar projects, I was running the numbers and realized just how stupid solar is in comparison to gas. On the surface, solar seems so far behind gasoline that it would never catch up, but the numbers work out very differently. Just on a purely energy-to-energy basis, a single 350 watt solar panel will produce the same amount of energy as 10 gallons of gasoline after only 2 years, but the real-world results are very different. Because only about 25% of the energy of gasoline is accessible, a single 350 watt solar panel actually replaces 10 gallons of gasoline every 6 months.
This is the reality for EV drivers and people with home energy backup systems: Solar power is strictly superior to gasoline.
