The refresh Model Y and Model 3 came out recently, and with them, we have the latest hardware on board. That includes the best cameras Tesla equips in all of their vehicles.
These cameras are incredibly robust and capable of seeing in day and night better than the average human. That said, they do suffer from one obstacle, and that is when the cameras get blocked by dirt and debris.
Even more annoying than regular road debris is the off gassing we are seeing more prevalent in Teslas more modern vehicles. These new Model Y and Model 3’s off gas significantly more than previous models, and that same issue finds itself in the Cybertruck as well.
Off gassing is a natural event with plastics and will be heaviest when the vehicle is new. As the plastics cure and settle, they will slow down their off gassing, but in the meantime, that glazes the windshield and can cause visibility issues for the cameras on Tesla’s FSD system.
Now Tesla’s will display a message on the screen alerting you to the issue, and telling you to schedule service. If you live in an area like me, the wait time for service is well over a month. Fortunately this is an easy DIY fix that you can deal with whenever the message pops up!
Do note, you will need to make sure you have appropriate materials to do this job correctly, which includes proper chemicals AND a proper microfiber cloth made specifically for glass. I have included links below to all the materials you will need to do the work.
Opening the camera housing is easy enough, and cleaning is a breeze. The most important part is to make sure you dont leave any streaks or lint behind, and that can be done by using an appropriate glass cleaner and correct microfiber towels.
