From Bearded Tesla Guy.
The Tesla Model Y is the best selling car on the planet, and it doesn’t just stop there. Tesla is well known for their ability to manufacture cars that all come with the hardware required for the vehicle to drive itself.
We have had FSD on our vehicles for a long time, and when it finally rolled out to the public as V10, it was not so great. It was new though, and my dad agreed to see it first hand and went on a drive with me. The system wasn’t so great on our local streets in Indiana, and although there were improvements along the way, I did not believe the system was capable of solving FSD in the end.
That all changed in the summer of 2024 when V12 was rolled out. Tesla threw out all the development and started from scratch, using machine learning and AI to supercharge their development of FSD. By feeding a computer thousands of videos of situations in driving, the computer learned how to operate on public streets without being told specifically each and every rule. This new approach to FSD development changed my mind on the viability of FSD, as the first version available to me in V12 was night and day difference from previous versions.
Here we are a year later, and deep into V13, FSD has continued to develop at an exponential rate, and come this June, Tesla has promised the first unsupervised FSD rides to begin in Austin, TX. Having driven countless miles on road trips, I have have had a front row seat to the development and improvements of FSD over time.
Now enter my Father…why am I in Indiana, and why am I leaving our 2025 Tesla Model Y here for him? Well, this will end up being a pretty cool real world use case for FSD. My dad is getting arm surgery soon, and when it is over, he will only have the use of one of his arms for at least 6 weeks. In that time, driving a traditional car will be difficult and will limit his mobility.
After sending me pictures of Tesla’s they have in inventory asking if they have FSD, he finally told me that he had determined that FSD is the solution for his problem. I agreed to lend him our Model Y so that he can rely on FSD for a couple months while he heals.
This will be a particularly cool test as my dad works in the auto dealer industry, meaning Tesla is kind of the enemy. A guy that shouldn’t be driving a Tesla, relying on the tech because it’s that good, is a clear example of how far FSD has come.
