Tesla Semi Beats Tesla’s Own Efficiency Rating Logging 4,700 Miles in Texas at 1.64 kWh per Mile

From Torque News.

The Tesla Semi just delivered a surprising real-world result on Texas highways. In a 4,700-mile trial conducted by Mone Transport, a cross-border freight company operating between Laredo and El Paso, the electric truck achieved 1.64 kWh per mile efficiency—beating Tesla’s own estimated 1.7 kWh per mile rating for a fully loaded Semi with a 500-mile range. That kind of efficiency is turning heads across the trucking industry, especially as fleets look for ways to reduce fuel costs and meet tightening emissions rules.

In this video, we break down what the Tesla Semi efficiency numbers actually mean, why 1.64 kWh per mile is significant, and how it compares to traditional diesel trucks. When you convert diesel energy usage into electric terms, a typical Class 8 diesel truck consumes the equivalent of 5 to 7 kWh per mile, according to industry energy comparisons. That means the Tesla Semi in this test used roughly three to four times less energy per mile—a massive difference for long-haul freight operations.

We’ll also look at how this test fits into a growing list of real-world Tesla Semi pilot programs. Logistics companies like ArcBest and DHL have already begun experimenting with electric trucking, while Tesla continues running Semis in its own logistics network. These trials are helping fleets answer critical questions about battery range, charging infrastructure, reliability, and total cost of ownership for electric semi trucks.

Finally, we explore the big question many truck drivers and fleet managers are asking: Can electric semi trucks really replace diesel trucks on long-distance routes? With rising diesel prices, stricter environmental regulations, and improving battery technology, the Tesla Semi is starting to look less like an experiment and more like a serious contender in the future of freight transportation.
