Description:
Today I take the Volkswagen E-Caravelle on a real-world 330 km Autobahn long-distance trip — in rain, 1°C, and normal weekday traffic.
At 110 km/h this electric 8-seater only has around 200 km of range, so this is already a serious challenge for this vehicle.
I charged twice at Ionity and analyzed:
Real motorway consumption
Charging curve & average charging speed
Winter efficiency at 1°C
True average speed including charging
Is this van usable for long trips?
⚡ Trip Data (Measured)
Distance: 320–322 km
Average consumption: 32 kWh/100 km (320 Wh/km)
Temperature: 1°C + rain
Total charging time: 50 minutes
Average charging speed: 75–80 kW
Total travel time: 4:05 h
Average speed incl. charging: 80 km/h
🚗 Driving Impressions
110–120 km/h is very relaxing
Range estimate changes extremely quickly
Rain increases consumption slightly
Android Auto Google Maps integration works great
Steering assist is okay but not perfect
Above 130 km/h it gets noticeably loud
Not built for 1,000 km road trips
This van is clearly designed for business transport, not high-speed Autobahn efficiency.
But if you must do 300+ km, plan for roughly 80 km/h average including charging.
