Tesla has been selling an upgraded ADAS system called Full Self Driving for quite some time now. As time has ticked by, many people have been wondering when it will actually be fully autonomous capable. Well, we set out to find out once and for all if that time is now.
As you may recall, we attempted this coast to coast FSD achievement back in September of 2025. We used out 2026 Tesla Model Y Juniper, and while equipped with the latest hardware Tesla offers, we encountered some issues. Across the US, we ended up taking over 5 different times, which is quite remarkable in and of itself. Of course we also had a catastrophic failure early on when the system failed to detect and avoid a massive metal ramp in the road.
Here we are several months later and V14 is here. With this new generation of FSD, our Juniper Model Y has taken quite a remarkable system and made it even better somehow. This newest software has addressed a number of issues found in normal driving, but even more so, it addresses the 5 main issues we had on the last attempt.
It’s almost unbelievable but we did actually make it, Coast to Coast, uninterrupted, without taking over or cheating the system in any way. In fact, I didn’t even let anyone know we were about to do this until we had already left. Nothing is unique about our Model Y, it is the same hardware and software on all new Model Y’s on the road.
Making this trip, non-stop, without outside help or intervention was the goal. We ultimately did make it, but it wasn’t perfect. It was good enough to pass, but there were some areas for improvement that you will be able to see for yourself in this series.
This trip was completely documented with no less than 2 cameras recording at all times plus a number of other cameras used throughout the trip. No footage has been edited in any way to hide or manipulate the performance of the system.
With that, huge congrats to the Tesla AI team who has worked tirelessly for years to get FSD to where it is today. Add in the fact that its vision only, it seems impossible, but here we are, doing it on a whim.
