Tesla just made a huge change to their lineup just days after they ended the ability to purchase FSD. In the wake of customers showing successful cross country uninterrupted autonomous drives, Tesla is seriously restricting the ability to own this capability in your own car.

Just days ago Tesla announced the sunsetting of FSD purchase. Right now you can buy a lifetime license to FSD, but it stays with the car you purchase it for forever. This license does not travel with you from car to car.

Likewise, you can subscribe to FSD instead and activate it when you want it, and turn it off when you dont. For $99/month, or $8,000 one time purchase, activating the most capable and advanced features in autonomous vehicles has been a staple at Tesla for years.

That is all shifting and starting February 14th, you will no longer be able to purchase FSD outright. That means Tesla will only allow FSD subscriptions moving forward, which for now is $99/month.

Elon responded to this announcement stating that as FSD advances, that monthly rate will increase, which is a claim made many times in the past, and generally followed up on until it hit $15k. Since then, FSD has reduced to $8k and hasn’t increased.

Just yesterday, Tesla mad another major change that has a major impact on the basic capabilities of their cars. When Tesla announced the lower cost Standard Model 3 and Model Y, those options came with Traffic Aware Cruise Control only. Autopilot was no longer being offered as a standard feature, but this was limited to these newer lower cost options.

As of last night, that strategy is now in place across the entire lineup at Tesla, And in a surprising shift, you no longer have the ability to get basic Autopilot with your Tesla purchase.

When the Cybertruck launched, it famously came without basic Autopilot, but it did come with FSD. 2 years later and basic Autopilot is still not available for Cybertruck and will not be developed at all.

This shift in strategy has been argued to be in response to Elon Musks new compensation package where he needs to get 10M active FSD subscribers as a goal. Others have argued that as a business, subscription models are superior in their profitability. The reality is probably somewhere in the middle.

So now is the time to figure out if you want to pay the 1 time fee for FSD, or wait it out and just subscribe. There is no indication that FSD will be able to be purchased again in the future, and Tesla is likely to stick to this new subscription model permanently.
