Electric Cars Go Pay-Per-Mile: EVED Explained

From AutoTrader (UK).

From April 2027, electric cars in the UK will no longer be exempt from Vehicle Excise Duty (VED). This change is often referred to as EVED – the introduction of road tax for electric vehicles.
In this video we explain what EVED is, why it’s being introduced, and what it means for electric car owners.

For years, EV drivers paid no road tax. But as electric cars become more common and petrol and diesel tax revenues decline, the UK government plans to bring EVs into the same tax system as other vehicles.

We break down:
• What EVED (Electric Vehicle Excise Duty) is
• When the new tax starts in April 2027
• How much EV drivers are expected to pay
• Why the government is introducing the change
• Whether this could lead to pay-per-mile driving taxes in the future

Electric cars are becoming mainstream in the UK, with millions already on the road. Understanding how EV taxation and road pricing may evolve is important for current owners and anyone considering switching to an electric car.

If you’re wondering whether EVs will stay cheaper to run, how road tax for electric cars will work, and what EVED means for the future of driving, this video explains it clearly.
