Two-day, 1,800+ mile road trip from the Florida Keys back to Charlotte in my F-150 Lightning Lariat Extended Range — with a baby, strong headwinds, surprise cold, and some very real range drama. We crossed 70,000 miles on this trip and averaged about 1.7 mi/kWh thanks to 15–20+ mph headwinds and chilly 40°F temps in Florida.
I show the whole drive: leaving the Keys, taking the Florida Turnpike up I‑95, stops in Fort Lauderdale and Vero Beach (Wawa supercharger), an overnight in Jacksonville (Fairfield with free Tesla wall connectors / ClipperCreek), then Pooler (Chick‑fil‑A / Starbucks), and the final charge in Columbia, SC before rolling into Charlotte. I share exact numbers — charges like 5→90% at Vero (added ~112 kWh), a 4% emergency plug into St. Augustine, and the last top‑off that got us home. I also cover the annoying hit‑and‑run that folded my mirror (minor cosmetic), why my Comma/Kama dashcam was a pain to extract footage from, and the A‑to‑Z Tesla adapter I use.
If you want a real look at Lightning road‑trip life — packing, baby logistics, charging realities, and how weather wrecks efficiency — this is it. Have you driven a Lightning (or any EV) in strong headwinds or cold? What charging stops do you prioritize for amenities vs. speed?
