Walmart, Mercedes-Benz, and IONNA are all racing to build out high-power fast charging right now — and they’re all installing the same hardware. Alpitronic Hyperchargers.

So here’s the quiz. Where do they come from? High-voltage power electronics, automotive-grade, Mercedes buys them — must be German. It isn’t. Swiss? No. China, which builds more EVs and more charging gear than anybody? No.

Italy. Alpitronic was founded in Bolzano, up in South Tyrol near the Austrian border, which makes it an Italian company that does a lot of its business in German. Land of Ferrari, world-class machine tools, ingenious people — and, it turns out, high-power rectifiers.

Footnote for the Buy America crowd: the units sold here are built here. Alpitronic’s US headquarters and service center is in Charlotte, North Carolina, and chargers for this market are produced in Appleton, Wisconsin. Designed in the Alps, assembled in the Midwest.
