Tesla has been the only game in the business when it comes to personally owned self driving vehicles. Although it has taken much longer than many expected, FSD development has brought Tesla to the forefront in Autonomy for personal owned vehicles.
Rivian has been quietly working on their own solution to autonomy, and unlike Tesla, it includes a suite of sensors on top of cameras. That said, There are no other players in the personal owned game than Tesla.
Rivian is now debuting their solution to Autonomy, including the public’s first look via R1S engineering build vehicles. It is important to note that the cars being demonstrated do not have any special equipment that does not come standard on new customer vehicles direct from Rivian.
During this demo, we had a chance to experience the unreleased engineering build of their autonomy software. Although this was a curated route, the performance was unexpected.
Although this isn’t quite to the level of Tesla’s current V14 FSD capabilities, it is quite impressive how smooth it is for the public’s first look. The vehicle navigates obstacles confidently, smooth acceleration and braking, but it does all of this well under posted speed limits.
The engineering team did confirm during our ride that the speed was intentionally set to be under the posted limits during this development period in an abundance of caution. Given there is only 1 other company out there that currently offers autonomy like this to customers in the US, this is likely to be the second option you can buy coming soon from Rivian.
