Rivian R2 Range Tests vs Reality: 700 Mile Work Week and Life Range Results

Rivian R2 real-world range after nearly 700 miles of work, traffic, hills, highways and off-road driving.

There has been a lot of discussion about Rivian R2 range following recent 70 mph highway testing. This video is not another controlled range test. Instead, it shows what the R2 looked like during an actual week of work and fun for someone who drives considerably more than average.

As a real estate photographer, my normal workday involves traveling to multiple homes throughout Pierce and Kitsap counties. That means highways around 60 to 65 mph, back roads, neighborhood streets, elevation changes, congestion around Bremerton and the shipyard, and plenty of stop-and-go driving.

Rivian Roamer recorded 641.9 miles across 41 drives with an overall efficiency of 3.0 mi/kWh. It missed the first 75 miles, so the R2 had approximately 745 miles on the odometer by the end of this period.

Sunday included an off-road trip through Tahuya ORV Park. Slow trail driving brought the weekly efficiency down because the R2 was still powering its systems and moving a heavy vehicle while covering very little distance. Even with that included, it averaged 3.0 mi/kWh across the tracked week.

Monday through Thursday accounted for approximately 534 miles, averaging more than 130 miles per workday. The busiest day was close to 150 miles, with no need to stop at a public charger.

The R2 was charged to 100% at home each night, just like my previous Gen 1 Quad-Motor R1T and Gen 2 Tri Max. The Gen 1 covered more than 40,000 miles in just under two years, while the Gen 2 reached 45,000 miles in only 18 months. That experience has given me a pretty good understanding of what a high-mileage Rivian needs to do.

During the tracked period, 222.6 kWh was added through five charging sessions. At my home electricity rate of approximately 7.5 cents per kWh, nearly 700 miles of driving cost only $16.70.

This is not meant to prove or disprove anyone else’s range testing. It is simply an example of what Rivian R2 range and efficiency can look like when the vehicle is used for work, traffic, highways, hills, back roads and off-road driving.

For me, the important question was not whether the R2 could produce one specific range number. It was whether it could keep up with someone who drives around 30,000 miles per year.

So far, it has.
