Zoox Challenges Tesla With Autonomy For Cities – Zoox Ride Along And Overview

While Tesla has been busy perfecting autonomy for every day driving, a number of new entrants have entered the space of Uber, offering new solutions to ride share in big cities. Of course Waymo is well known at this point as offering a driverless ride sharing solution, but we have more companies entering this space.

Zoox was announced just a couple years ago, and now they are pilot testing in Las Vegas with real customers. I had a chance to experience the Zoox for myself, and after a number of trips, I have a lot of thoughts about this platform as a possible solution for large city autonomy.

Zoox, unlike Tesla, is using a suite of sensors and cameras to run their autonomy software. Lidar on all corners, ultrasonic sensors and cameras are packed to the gill on this thing. Notably, this is the first autonomous platform that has been released specifically without a driver in mind. In fact there is no steering wheel anywhere on this vehicle.

Interestingly enough, even Tesla is moving to a steering wheel-less lineup and only plans on launching 1 more vehicle with a steering wheel at all, the Roadster 2.0. But this platform is also bi-directional, meaning it can go forward from the front, or the back.

With seating for 4, the interior has lots of space, although it does require 1 set of passengers to sit backwards, which could be a problem for those prone to motion sickness. Additionally, the scissor doors open on both sides, meaning the vehicle can pick up and drop off from either side adding to the flexibility of the platform.

Finishes on the inside are a far cry from the comforts you will find in Teslas Model Y’s currently being used as Robotaxi fleet. Base vinyl and plastics are found throughout, but offer modularity for easy repairs, and more importantly, make cleanup easy.

I think it’s safe to say that there is room for many in this new age of autonomy, and companies like Zoox are taking the risk and proving out the capabilities of the system. The more companies we have pushing the envelope, the faster autonomy becomes a reality, and the safer our roads become.
