I flew to Germany expecting to film a giant field of mirrors making jet fuel from sunlight. What I found was something way more interesting — and honestly, it changed how I think about sustainable tech.

This is synthetic jet fuel. It’s chemically identical to the kerosene pumped from the ground, except every atom was built from agricultural waste, water, and renewable electricity. No sulfur, no aromatics, no soot — just clean-burning fuel that drops into any engine flying today.

Here’s the problem nobody likes to talk about: aviation is 4% of global emissions and growing, and batteries will NEVER power a 777 from London to Sydney. A battery pack big enough would weigh 9 times the entire aircraft. Hydrogen planes? Pushed to the 2040s. That means the only real path to clean flight is changing the fuel itself.

I visited Synhelion in Jülich, Germany — one of the only plants on Earth turning CO2 and water into kerosene using concentrated solar heat, a 1200°C steam trap, ceramic brick thermal storage, and a chemical reaction discovered in 1925. We talk about why their solar tower might actually be optional, how Europe’s Refuel EU mandate is forcing airlines to buy this stuff by law, and why contrails might be a bigger climate problem than CO2 itself.
